The National Weather Service said late Sunday that the Deep South is going to be under the gun for tornado activities early this week. Following on the heals of a very slow beginning to the United States’ severe weather season, things are beginning to fall into place that will lead to a more active period of weather in April. The states of Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri face the biggest threats of tornadoes Tuesday but even locations like St. Louis, MO and Memphis, TN are at high risk for twisters.

In terms of economic damage, tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are the top weather phenomena in the nation. The United States has more tornadoes than any other country on earth. Every year, about 1,200 twisters claim the lives of dozens while causing damages into the hundreds of millions of dollars. March 2013 has been unusually quiet in terms of tornadic activity as there were only 17 tornadoes reported.

Forecasters across the nation agree that an active and unsettled wet week is ahead for much of the country. Maybe its just a coincidence that this week is Severe Weather Awareness week. But, seeing that the United States’ peak tornado season runs from mid-April through May, it really is no fluke that there is the chance of very severe weather developing now. Southern lower Michigan and many cities in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois may see rainfall from between 2 to 4 inches Tuesday and Wednesday. This is because a stationary front is set to stall out across southern lower Michigan Monday through mid-week. This part of the country could also see strong winds, hail and possible tornadoes.

A massive supercell thunderstorm already struck the US this week. Sunday night, a severe storm dropped hail in nearly every county in Missouri and was moving north towards, Illinois creating challenges for property owners who may have neglected sump pump maintenance with a fairly subdued spring to date. In another place in Tennessee, a government employee lost his life when he was sucked into a drain pipe after he was trying to remove debris to unclog it. The water rushed into the pipe and carried him into it. Eastern Iowa is dealing with massive flooding due to extreme overnight torrential rains, with additional heavy rain in the forecast for today. Residents have been dealing with flooded basements and homes as the rain totals began to rise.

The areas that were hit including Cedar Rapids, experienced massive sewer backups, and it also washed out several local roads. The torrential rains hit around Highway 20 at 9 P.M on Sunday.

Highway 1 in Linn County is still closed due to flash flood damage, and traffic is being detoured from Highway 151 to Highway 13, and then south to Highway 30 back to east Mount Vernon, according to the Linn County Sherriff’s reports.

The Mercy Medical Center has remained closed as the emergency department staff works to clean up the water that came through the Eighth Avenue entrance. Any residents who need emergency medical attention are being sent to St. Lukes, although Mercy is set to open their doors today. The fifth flood patient tower is also experiencing damage, as the roof drain failed. Crews are rushing to make repairs so that the hospital can re-open their doors.
A Cedar Rapids police report stated that several roads in the area were completely washed away due to the torrential flooding that occurred overnight. Many fire department and police department crews spent their night rescuing stranded motorists, as well as trying to clear the roadways. There were many parked cars that flooded out, were washed into the road, or even carried into resident’s yards due to floodwater.

A Public Safety Spokesman stated that these roads are closed by means of barricades until repairs can be made, and there are many vehicles in the road that still need to be cleared away. The Police force are urging residents to be cautious this morning because there are still issues that have yet been reported.

The torrential rains sent area rivers and streams that were already high from the recent rain, up significantly. The observed water levels in the Cedar River, in Cedar Rapids, rose more than two feet in two hours last night. The widespread rain totals from the rainstorm totaled at about two to six inches. There is also a threat for additional thunderstorms with more heavy rain in the forecast.

Also, reported winds of about 80 mph that were brought on by a derecho left more than 95,000 customers without power. A local station in Cedar Rapids reported that the storms left damage in just about every neighborhood. Earlier in the day, a possible tornado was reported near Stuart. A lot of damage to houses and other building structures were reported in Warren County as storms moved throughout the area. In Western Iowa, storms dumped giant sized hail up to 4 inches in diameter in Rockwell City, and Harlan reported 3 inch diameter hail, which equals out to be slightly larger than the size of a baseball.

The Governor of Iowa has declared a state of emergency for Cedar, Guthrie, Jones, Adair, and Linn Counties. This means that state resources can be used in responding to ongoing flooding occurrences and severe weather. This derecho came one day after severe weather brought on heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 70 mph. A highway in Fairfax was partially collapsed, and part of a highway near Mount Vernon was also partially collapsed.

Recent storms on Saturday and Sunday have caused several storm-related problems such as flooded basements and overflowing streets in Chicago and its suburbs. Northwest regions of the city are probably the most affected ones. For instance, several homes located on the Hatlan Avenue in Mount Prospect were flooded. Residents reported that the water was entering their homes faster than they could get it out and flow of water was so forceful that it threw down it the bulky items in basements.

Many instances of basement flooding were also reported from Elk Groove Village. About 10-foot of water from the Salt Creek, located nearby, entered the homes of the residents here causing serious damage to their property and contents.

Neighborhoods in Northfield, Winnetka and Glencoe were completely submerged under the water on Saturday morning. Two big condo complexes and several vehicles were inundated by the deluge in Palatine. Residents struggled to move their valuable belongings off the ground, but for most, carpets, furniture and appliances were damaged. People were seen pushing their vehicles out onto the streets and helping others that were stuck on the first floor to get their children out.
Probably, the most devastated community is Des Plaines. Situated close to the river, the inhabitants are more accustomed to the problems caused by rains, but the deluge on Saturday flooded the regions that usually don’t get affected, including main streets such as Touhy Avenue. Large areas of Touhy Mobile Home Park were inundated in spite of having a comparatively new sewer system.

The state of emergency was declared in the Des Plaines. Mayor of the city, Marty Moylan stated that they have the entire workforce ready to help and have a strategy to tackle the situation. Sandbags were placed at different locations in the city.
O’Hare Campus of the DePaul University located on the Far Northwest Side of the city of Chicago was closed on Saturday as well as on Sunday due to power failure and flooding of parking lots. The classes and other activities are expected to recommence on Monday morning.

Many car owners whose cars were parked on the flooded streets found the inside of their vehicles soaked in water after the weekend storms. The passages and driveways across the region were filled with wet furniture, electronics and carpets.
