Flooded Basement Cleanup

What to Do if You Become Victim of a Flood

Waking up to find that your home has been flooded is the stuff of nightmares. This can happen due to a number of different causes; sometimes nature causes the damage while other times it can be due to human causes. No matter what the reason for your flood there will be certain actions that you will want to take.

Always Put Safety First

This cannot be stressed enough. Your number one priority is not your belongings but your safety and the safety of the family; everything else comes second. Do not take any action that is going to compromise this safety. If it is safe to do so, you will want to turn off any your power, gas, and water supply. Be very careful of touching water if there is any chance that there could be a live current passing through it.

Contact Your Insurance Company

If you have home insurance then you will want to contact these people before attempting any clean up. Failure to do this could affect your ability to later make a claim for the damage. Speak to the company and they will be best able to advise you as to how you should proceed. They may want to send a representative straight away to assess the damage. You might want to use this opportunity to photograph the damage but only if it is safe to do this. The insurance company should also be able to put you in touch with the professionals who can help you clean up the mess.

Keep Pets and Children away from the Flood

We have already mentioned the importance of safety but it is worth restating here in regards to children and pets. Both may want to investigate this strange event that has occurred in their world but it is important to keep them away from the area. It is possible to drown in a very small amount of water and there are also lots of other risks associated with flooding.

If you Are Victim to a Large Flood

Sometimes floods can be hugely catastrophic events that not only affect you but also your whole neighborhood or even your town. If you are caught up in one of these major events then again your priority will be safety. If it is not safe for you to leave your home then find a secure area and wait for help to arrive.
